Hi, Everyone. Today’s topic is What are Output Devices? Output devices converts computer data into human-readable form. For example, O/P devices Monitor to display visuals, printer prints documents, speakers generate audio. By bridging the gap between digital information and human perception, O/P devices play a crucial role in the computer-human interaction process. They help make technology accessible and comprehensible.

With the use of Output device user can view or print data easily. There are two types of data and these are Soft and Hard Copy. Soft copy can be viewed on a screen and hard copy can be obtained from printer. Printer is used to convert Soft copy to Hard copy.

Monitor
Most people commonly use a monitor or screen as an output device. A computer monitor displays information in pictorial form. The picture on a monitor comprises thousands of tiny colored dots called pixels. Increasing the number of pixels in a display enhances the output quality. Additionally, modern monitors support high resolutions, improving clarity. As technology advances, monitors become more energy-efficient. Moreover, various monitor sizes cater to diverse needs, from professional tasks to entertainment.
Most people usually refer to a monitor as the Visual Display Unit (VDU). Modern monitors typically use thin film transistor (TFT), Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), Light Emitting Diode (LED), displays while Older monitors used Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) displays.
Printer
A printer functions as a peripheral device and output device in computer systems. It generates hard copies of electronic data, such as documents, images, or graphics, onto physical media like paper. Printers translate digital information into a tangible format, providing a convenient way for users to share, archive, or present their work. Additionally, various types of printers, including inkjet, laser, and thermal printers, cater to different printing needs and preferences. There are two types of printers:
Impact Printers and Non-Impact Printers
- Impact Printers: These printers prints from images and characters by striking a mechanism such as a print hammer or wheel against an inked ribbon. Thus this process leaves inked impact on paper. That’s why these printers are called Impact Printer. Example: Dot-Matrix Printer, Hammer or Wheel Printer, and Line Printer.
- Non-Impact Printers: Non impact printers don’t use any direct contact between ink ribbon and paper. They use technologies such as laser, electrostatic, chemical and inkjet. Example: Inkjet Printers and Laser Printer.
Printers Definitions:
Laser Printer
Many workplaces use laser printers because they can print a large number of sheets very quickly and produce high-quality documents. Laser printers are also quite expensive because they produce high-quality output and work quickly. A laser printer uses non-impact, photocopier technology and is a popular type of personal computer printer.
Dot Matrix Printer
A dot matrix printer uses a fixed number of pins or wires to print. Dot matrix printers were the first type of printer used at homes and schools. However, as technology has advanced, they are not used much anymore. Dot matrix printers are noisy and produce low-quality prints.
Inkjet Printer
Inkjet printers are a popular choice for home printing needs due to their ability to produce high-quality images and documents. They work by precisely spraying thousands of tiny ink droplets onto paper, similar to how TV and computer screens render images through clusters of thousands of pixels. This method allows for vibrant colors and detailed prints, making inkjet printers ideal for photos and graphics. Additionally, inkjet printers are relatively affordable and versatile, supporting various paper types and sizes. Plotter
A plotter is a computer hardware device much like a printer, used for printing vector graphics. Plotters print high-quality images on very large pieces of paper, often about 3 feet wide and 10 feet long. Engineers, architects, and map-makers use plotters to draw plans of buildings, diagrams of machines, or large-scale maps.
Speakers
Speakers act as output devices for computers, converting digital audio signals into sound. They enable users to enjoy music, videos, and voice calls. By vibrating speaker cones, they enhance multimedia experiences. Available in various sizes, from built-in to advanced external systems, external speakers offer better sound quality. Consequently, speakers play a crucial role in delivering audio for diverse computer applications.
Projector
A projector serves as an output device that displays computer-generated images and videos onto a large screen or surface. It enhances presentations, movies, and educational materials by providing a bigger visual experience. Projectors convert digital data into light signals and project them through lenses. Virtual Reality Headset
VR devices serve as output devices that immerse users in a virtual environment by displaying 3D graphics and videos.
