Hi everyone, We are discussing What is Computer Network. Imagine you are working in a office with 2 or more officemates. You are working on a file. What if one of your office want access to that file without disturbing you? Here comes the need of Computer Networking. Networking is a method of sharing content of one Computer to Another. In this all the computers are connected to each other using a LAN cable or may be wirelessly somewhere in the world and this whole process is known as Computer Network.

Advantages of Computer Network:

Connecting all computers through LAN cable can be very useful, not only data, but, you can also share peripherals like, Printer, Scanners through networking to work hassle free. I mean, One can use a single printer and 2 or more PCs with the ability to print from any computer on printer. One can share files with each other to be more productive.

Definition: A Computer Network is an interconnection of two or more computers that are able to exchange information. “Data communication links like copper wires and radio links connect computers.

Computer Networking may be located in a room, building, city, country, or anywhere in the world. Computer Networking works on the model of Client/Server Model. There are many types of Computer Networking but all these have dependencies such as Size of the Network, Connection, Network Topology.

Types of Computer Network

LAN (Local Area Network)

Local Area Networks (LANs) serve as computer networks primarily used for local communication. They connect computers within a confined space, such as a room, building, office, or campus, which spans a few kilometers at most. Furthermore, individuals or organizations privately own these networks, facilitating the exchange of information. Ring, Star, and Bus topologies are commonly used in LAN Networking. It runs on speed from 10 mbps to 100mbps. A LAN based on Wi-Fi network is known as Wireless Local Area Network.

MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)

A Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) spreads over a city, connecting computers using cables. This network links several Local Area Networks (LANs) throughout the city, effectively covering distances of up to 30-50 kilometers. For instance, cable television networks are examples of MANs. Furthermore, MANs efficiently connect and manage extensive areas, providing seamless communication and data transfer across various urban regions.

WAN (Wide Area Network)

A Wide Area Network (WAN) connects computers over long distances, such as cities, countries, or even worldwide. Furthermore, WANs use public, leased, or private communication links to span these long distances. Additionally, WANs utilize telephone lines, satellite links, and radio links to establish connections. The need to be able to connect any number of computers at any number of sites, results in WAN technology to be different from the LAN technology. It is slower and less reliable than a LAN. Internet is a common example of WAN.

PAN (Personal Area Network)

A personal area network (PAN) connects electronic devices within a user’s immediate area. Moreover, the size of a PAN ranges from a few centimeters to a few meters. Additionally, one of the most common real-world examples of a PAN is the connection between a Bluetooth earpiece and a smartphone.
